BuildScanIR™, a division of Stockton Infrared Thermographic Services, Inc., has announced its co-sponsorship of IR/INFO 2009. Hosted annually by Infraspection Institute, IR/INFO is an educational conference and technical symposium for infrared thermography and related P/PM, PdM and NDT technologies. IR/INFO 2009 will be held January 18-21, 2009, at the Holiday Inn International Drive Resort Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

BuildScanIR™ thermographers will be coming from across the country to offer through-provoking presentations and short courses on specialized applications for buildings. “This is an opportunity for building thermographers with different backgrounds to share their experiences and expertise with a wide range of others,” says Greg Stockton, President of SITS and Chairman of the Building Session.

Jim Seffrin, Director of Infraspection Institute states, “This is the second year that BuildScanIR™ has co-sponsored IR/INFO and we are very pleased to be working with them again. IR/INFO provides a unique opportunity for thermographers and building science professionals to meet, network and learn from leading industry experts. We encourage all BuildScanIR™ members to join us for four days of learning, networking, and professional development.”

For more information or to register for IR/INFO 2009, call 609-239-4788 or visit the IR/INFO 2009 website.

Infraspection Institute is the world’s foremost authority in infrared training and certification. Founded in 1980, Infraspection Institute has trained and certified nearly 10,000 thermographers worldwide. Since 1987, Infraspection has hosted the annual IR/INFO conference as a forum for information exchange in the thermographic, NDT, and P/PM realms. IR/INFO is a unique gathering dedicated to the exchange of information that is practical, relevant and comprehensive.

Stockton Infrared Thermographic Services, founded in 1989 by Gregory R. Stockton, is an industry leader and innovator of a number of infrared applications. BuildScanIR™ Network is the largest group of private thermographers in North America. BuildScanIR™ is geared toward educating home inspectors, homeowners, building inspectors, building managers, and service providers as to the uses of infrared thermography in building sciences. BuildScanIR™ Services provides state-of-the-art building infrared thermographic surveys used in litigation to locate structural defects, track down moisture in building components, find missing insulation, detect thermal envelope problems and discover building design flaws.

Is Icynene the right insulation or not? Print E-mail

Recently, we were invited to provide an infrared scan on a newly-renovated small home after Icynene insulation had been applied to most of it’s exterior walls on the inside before the drywall was installed. The temperature that day was about 4° C which will be perfect for scanning. However, since the heating system was not hooked up yet, there was no temperature difference to reveal the heat loss. Thus, early in the morning we called the owner to heat up the house by using rental kerosene heaters to provide background heating to the entire house. The interior temperature was about 19° C. By the time we arrived on site, it was late afternoon. We specifically scheduled for the late afternoon so that solar loading would be minimized on the exterior walls during the scan. First, we scanned on the exterior starting with the East, then North, then West and finally, the South wall.

Infrared (IR) thermography can be used as a building diagnostic technique, to perform surveys of buildings for heat loss, missing insulation, moisture, structural defects and other unwanted conditions. The building inspection industry is evolving with demands for more in-depth inspection information, such as energy-efficiency and construction inadequacies.

Here’s a good example of why a home inspector should use infrared…

The homeowner contacted us to conduct an infrared inspection prior to the final closing of their home. Permission from the builder’s superintendent was secured prior to the inspection. The two-story home has approximately 3,500 square feet of living space.

Infrared Imagery in General
Infrared imagery is often a grayscale picture whose scales (or shades of gray) represent the differences in temperature and emissivity (opposite of reflectivity) of objects in the image. As a general rule, objects in the image that are lighter in color are warmer, and darker objects are cooler. No object is detected in visible light wavelengths (400-700 nm) rather, it detects infrared wavelengths (3000-5000nm & 8000-14000 nm). Lights and other relatively hot objects are evident, but as a result of their heat--not light emissions.

When an image is taken with an infrared camera, it is often recorded onto videotape and/or digitally saved to an on-board storage device. The images are downloaded, opened in specialized software and modified in a number of ways to enhance their value to the end user, like colorizing the images or adjusting the span and temperature to highlight a particular object in the image.
